Chacko Thomas, Deputy CEO, Tata Coffee Ltd. received the award on behalf of the team.

The second edition of the Ernesto Ily International Coffee Award was presented on 16th October in New York. We are pleased to announce that Tata Coffee’s Nullore Estate won the first place from India beating other key competitors. Described as ‘a full-bodied coffee with a bold flavor. Intense cocoa and notes of toasted bread leave a seductively sweet chocolate aftertaste,’ the Nullore Estate in Coorg is best known for its Tata Nullore Estate microlot- the first Indian microlot to be featured last year in Starbucks Reserve stores in Seattle, USA.

The Illy awards recognize top quality coffee growers who produce the best beans across the world. They also affirm the importance of working hand in hand with producers in order to continue offering the best coffee to the world distinguished by their excellence in terms of sustainable quality.

Over the last year, the Illy quality Lab in Trieste, Italy, identified the 3 best coffees representing the 2016-17 harvest from 9 distinct and important coffee producing countries: Brazil, Columbia, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Nicaragua and Rwanda. The three most representative lots from each country then proceeded to the finals, where one winner per origin was awarded the top spot.

“Twenty-seven years ago my father, Ernesto Illy, created the Prêmio de Qualidade do Cafè para Espresso in Brazil, which helped to transform the country into a producer of high- quality coffee”- explains Andrea Illy, President of Illycaffè—“and in 2016 we decided to celebrate this outcome by taking the prize to an international level with the objective of showing our appreciation for the efforts of all the women and men of coffee for achieving sustainable quality.”

Congratulations to the Tata Coffee team for this big win!
